Kolkata Metro to have air conditioned coaches

Kolkata Metro, India’s oldest metro railway service to get all of its trains air conditioned in the upcoming years. By 2020 all the coaches will be air conditioned said chief public relations officer of Kolkata Metro, Indrani Banerjee. Currently Kolkata Metro has 27 rakes of which 14 are air conditioned and the remaining 13 are still not air conditioned. The new rakes will have CCTV cameras in each compartments and will have a communication line to the motorman in case of any emergency. The new rakes would ensure jerk-free ride also. 40 new rakes have been ordered by Kolkata Metro of which most of them will come from the Integral Coach Factory at Perambur. While, 14 of the new rakes are ordered from China’s CRRC Corporation. 2 new rakes manufactured by ICF (Integral Coach Factory) are currently undergoing trials before their deployment on the route that connects Noapara in north and Kavi Subhas in south. Kolkata Metro first started its operation in 1984 and now everyday 6.8 lakh commuters travel along the 27 km stretch.
